Very interesting article, has given me the confidence I need to know that I can make my own detergents. I use a lot of cleaning products in my business and I know that the manufacturer I buy them from has a very profitable business so I think its time for me to expand in this direction.
Just one question: Do you give the chemical name for the ingredients you use in your formulations? I have seen some cleaning product recipes that use a perticular companys mixture of ingredients and I dont know what these are or whether I can get them in my country. I would prefer to know exactly what I am using in my products. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Thanks for taking the time – that’s a great question.
All my formulations provide the actual chemical or cosmetic ingredients by their actual name – no brand names or such.
I always advocate the need to be as much in control of your business as possible.
If you’re using proprietary ingredient blends to make your own cleaning products (or toiletries, cosmetics, etc) and you don’t know how to replace or replicate these ingredients, you can find yourself at the mercy of your suppliers. These blended ingredient bases are made by some suppliers for precisely that reason – to keep you returning exclusively to them in order to be able to make your products.
These blends are often over-priced – you can shop around and get the individual ingredients and blend them yourself for much less. Also, if your supplier has shipping or delivery delays, or any other problems, and you can’t get supply – what does that mean for your business if you have orders to fulfill?
Suppliers sometimes change the formulations of these blends – that means your products will also change – sometimes this will not be noticeable in the end product, but sometimes it will.
And what if your supplier decides to completely discontinue that particular blend of ingredients? You’ll need to find a suitable replacement (fast).
All these are issues I have seen happen over the years. For that reason, I rarely (if ever) use proprietary trademark blends. By using the raw base ingredients, you will always maintain maximum control (and profits) in your business. You can change suppliers at anytime if you don’t like their service or their prices.
The AustraLab formulations use only raw ingredients by their chemical name.
P.S. Don’t let that “chemical” word scare you – water is a chemical, as is the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the shirt we wear (whether it’s organic cotton, pure silk or spun polyester, it’s still a chemical).

The AustraLab program includes formulations for making toilet cleaner and liquid handwash. These products cannot be made with the same ingredients, they require different compounds. I hope that answers your query.
