Cosmetic Chemistry ... How to Start your Own Business
So, you want to be a cosmetics chemist? You want to join the cosmetic chemistry industry and formulate skincare, makeup, haircare, toiletries and beauty products?
But – you think you need to go to university for four or five years, spend tens of thousands of dollars in tuition fees, and gain qualifications such as a cosmetic chemistry degree or chemical engineering degree – right?
Click here to discover the secrets of making cosmetics, makeup, skin care and hair care and join this strictly limited program.
No – you don’t need a university degree of any kind – Not if your main aim in wanting to be a cosmetic chemist is to start your own high profit cosmetics business and join this prestigious multi-billion dollar industry.
The most common myth in the makeup chemistry industry is that you need a university education to start a business in the field of cosmetics manufacturing – or that you need to be lucky in looking for cosmetic chemistry internships.
This is the advice offered on one cosmetic chemistry related website:
“Get a science degree. Unless you have a relative who started the company, you will need a college degree in science since most cosmetic firms require it. Preferred ones include degrees in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. However, plenty of scientists in our industry have Biology, Microbiology, and even Physics degrees.
“Consider getting an advanced degree. True, a 4-year college degree is all you need, but you can improve your chances of breaking into cosmetics by getting an advanced degree.”
It’s true that if you want to make cosmetic formulations from scratch, without any previous experience making cosmetics, and you want to work for a big international manufacturing company, you will need formal qualifications for most cosmetic chemistry jobs.
But if your main aim is to start your own cosmetics business and manufacture your own cosmetics brands (and make much more money than any cosmetics manufacturing company will ever pay you), you don’t need to step foot in any academic establishment, spend a minimum of three or four years studying, or spend tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of dollars in tuition fees. And you don’t need a relative who owns the company – you can own the company.
I’m a cosmetic and chemical engineer with over 30 years experience, so I do know what I’m talking about. And I know that many cosmetic chemistry programs do not equip you with the knowledge and formulations that you need to start your own business.
I developed AustraLab especially for entrepreneurs who want to be able to make makeup, skin, hair and beauty products just like chemists with years of study and experience under their belts. If you just want to get straight into this business and start making money, without the time and expense of a university degree, this program was made for you.
If you can follow a basic cooking recipe, you can easily follow my top quality cosmetic formulas and begin making your own range of makeup, skin care, shampoo, hair care, toiletries and cosmetics. If you then decide you want to become more involved, once you’ve had a little practice and gain confidence, you will easily be able to adapt these formulations to create your own cosmetics formulas – without the need for any chemistry degree – and you’ll be earning much more than the average cosmetic chemistry salary.
My cosmetic chemistry formulations include:
Shampoos and Conditioners
Hairstyling & Finishing Products
Color Cosmetics – foundations, mineral formulas, lip colors, eyeliner, mascara, nail polish
Skincare – cleansers, toners, moisturizers, acne preparations, anti-aging preparations
Suncare – UV protection and self-tanning lotions
Baby care products – shampoo, baby bath and lotion
Men’s – shaving foam, aftershave
Hand Care – hand cleansers, hand scrub, moisturizing creams
Toiletries – handwashes, deodorants
You can easily begin with minimal equipment – you don’t require a fancy laboratory – and just a small supply of raw ingredients. Because most cosmetics and toiletries comprise about 80% water, there’s no need to stock a large inventory of surfactants, emulsifiers, conditioning agents, micas, pigments, fragrances, etc. A small supply will make a large quantity of products.
The beauty about the cosmetics manufacturing industry is that you can make products on order, which will substantially reduce your outlay and minimize losses. As a private label manufacturer – which you can read more about here and here – you can manufacture for hairdressing and beauty salons (and myriad other businesses) under their own label. This is an ever-increasing market, with very little competition. Obviously, the big international companies only manufacture under their own brand names, so this is an open playing field which only a few switched-on entrepreneurs have entered into.

I have realized this is the career for me, theres just one problem, I’m only 14. Obviously I can’t afford the $1997 formulas, even though I so desperately want them, so is there anything I can make/do (like beginner steps to creating my company) until I can afford your formulations and get my company started? Thanks, much appreciated.
This is so interesting!
I think this is a career that is often overlooked by college students, particularly science majors.
I once met someone who majored in Biochemistry and was pursuing work in the perfume industry. I was always curious about what steps that might involve.
Thank you for the information!
Hello am Diana, and want the lest of ingredient for shampoo and the steps involve in the process.
You’ll find plenty more information about making hair care products in the “Making Shampoo and Hair Care” category of this site.
