Private Label Hair Care – from shampoos and conditioners to serums and sprays – is big business.

If you own a hairdressing salon, having your own private label hair care line will give you significant prestige and profits.

If you’re looking for a high profit business, manufacturing private label hair care could make you a fortune.

In this article, I’m going to address the main reasons why, as a hair salon owner, you need to make your own shampoo and conditioner and create your “own label” hair care products.

If you’re not in the hairdressing industry, but you’re interested in discovering how to make shampoo and conditioner to start your own business, these same factors will provide excellent marketing angles to help you sell private label hair care to salon owners.

Click here to discover the trade secret formulations for how to make shampoo and hair care products.

10 Compelling Reasons to Create your Own Brand of Shampoos & Conditioners (or start your own business manufacturing private label hair care for salon owners)

1. Brand Loyalty

Do you really want to recommend and sell products that your clients can buy somewhere else – supermarket shelves, drugstores, discount stores, cosmetic websites, not to mention other hair salons? Wouldn’t you rather offer them an exclusive product they can’t find anywhere but YOUR salon?

After all, what’s wrong with YOUR brand? Your salon has its own unique identity. You have a special relationship with your clients – your name is your most valuable asset. Your clients respect your knowledge – you can be a powerful influence on their buying decisions because they trust your advice. Channel that power into building your own brand and your own valuable brand equity.

Read this article for more valuable advice about the benefit of private label cosmetics, private label skin care and private label hair care.

2. Image & Prestige

If, as a salon owner, you have an established salon name (your own “brand”) which you want to build on (maybe you want to start a chain of salons or create a franchise) making your own line of private label hair care products immediately puts you “out there”.

Or, if you’re in the process of establishing your salon’s name, and want to develop an identity in the market, promoting your own range of private label hair care products is perfect for creating a presence.

If you want to start a business as a private label hair care manufacturer, you’ll find many salon owners will love the prestige of being able to say “I have my own brand“.

3. Pricing & Profits

Instead of putting even more money into the hands of the global conglomerates, you could be putting the profits into your own pocket. And the profits to be made from private label hair care products are enormous.

If you engage private label hair care manufacturers to do the job for you, you will still be better off, but you won’t be making the maximum possible profits as if you were making your own shampoo and conditioner. It’s so easy to make shampoo and hair care products, you’ll wonder why you’ve been missing out on making the money yourself. With the AustraLab formulations, you’ll be making top quality, professional products.

Every time you recommend a L’Oreal product (or any other brand) to your clients, you’re providing priceless free advertising for one of the wealthiest manufacturing companies in the world.

And what do they do for you in return?

Major manufacturers usually don’t play fair with hairdressing salons. Sales reps have their “favorites” – they give these salon owners special discounts and deals, which other salon owners never know about. There are different pricing structures, depending on how much you buy and how much your sales rep likes you.

If you don’t believe these companies employ less then ethical tactics, take a look here and here.

All business owners are in business to make money – there’s no reason not to maximize your profits.

4. Independence

When you make your own private label hair care, you have a much greater level of control over your business. Why be dictated to by greedy conglomerates?

5. Control Formulations

Big hair care manufacturers are constantly reinventing their product lines – adding new shampoos, conditioners, styling aids and finishing products, in some cases discontinuing certain items, changing formulations, changing fragrances, packaging, etc. Sometimes they discontinue an entire range and replace with it with something “bigger and better”.

Was there anything wrong with the previous products? Is the new range really “bigger” or “better”? Usually not – the change is really just a marketing gimmick to entice customers to buy something “new”.

But what does that mean for hairdressing salons?

A. You could be stuck with the “old” stock on your shelves. When there’s a new product range coming off the production line, the big cosmetic manufacturing giants will get rid of all the remaining stock of the previous line by giving hairdressers a seemingly “great deal”, enticing them to buy a large quantity of products for a big discount. Of course, they neglect to mention that the new range is arriving next month (along with a huge TV and magazine advertising campaign, to ensure customers will want the new range – not the old stock).

B. As a hair salon owner, you’ve been promoting, recommending and selling particular products which both you and your clients love.

Suddenly, the manufacturer pulls the plug on this range. In marketing terms, it’s become boring – time for something new!

Where does that leave you, the hair salon owner? You and your staff are in the position of having to start all over again, building trust with your clients for a new range of hair care products.

Maybe your clients will like them, maybe they won’t. But the fact remains, you didn’t have any say in it.

When you make your own private label hair care, you and only YOU decide when (or if) to change the formulations of the products you sell.

6. Control Ingredients & Quality

It’s true that most hair care products comprise about 80% water (now you know why there’s so much profit in those bottles). In most cases, the active ingredients – those additives that can really make a difference in such aspects as shine, conditioning, smoothness, softness, etc – are used in the smallest possible amount, so as to maximize profit margins. The higher the concentration of water (or aqua/acqua/eau – as it is usually printed on labels), the higher the profits.

You can make your own private label shampoo and hair care and, with the addition of just a small percentage more of the active ingredients in the formula, you can create a vastly superior product.

And in most cases, you won’t need to sell your products at higher prices than the competition. Just by increasing the percentage of actives from 1% to 2%, you can create a noticeably improved product without a noticeable increase in manufacturing cost.

You can decide what fragrances, pigments, botanical extracts you want in your products. With a bit of experience under your belt, you’ll even be able to develop and formulate your own, truly unique range of private label hair care products.

7. Control Packaging

Choose private label packaging and labels to suit the image of your salon – classic and elegant, retro or chic, it’s up to you. Every time your client reaches for shampoo under the shower, or styles their hair, they see YOUR salon name on the label.

8. Control Marketing

Promote the image YOU want for your products – not what the manufacturing companies want you to have.

Every recommendation for a product with your name on it, is a recommendation for your business.

9. Stock products that Sell – in the quantity you require

Why do the big hair care manufacturers make so many different products – so many different shampoos, conditioners, styling aids, etc?

It’s true that consumer’s needs vary – there’s thick hair, fine hair, curly hair, oily scalp, dry scalp, etc.

Different people like different sorts of products. Some consumers want to make their hair more curly, some want to tame their curls.

Some like bubble gum scents, some prefer fragrance-free.

But the main reason the manufacturing companies make so many different products is not for the sake of consumers (as they would like you to believe – sorry, but they’re not that altruistic). The main reason for offering so many products is to make as much money as possible from hair salon owners (and pharmacies, supermarkets, other retailers, etc). Most cosmetic manufacturing companies require that hair salons stock the entire range of a product line – you can’t just buy what you like and what you think will sell.

What this means, is that many salons have stock sitting on their shelves, for which they have little or no market.

Stock on shelves is money on shelves, if it is not turned over.

When you make your own private label hair care, you can make big batches or small batches – whatever you require.

10. Diversification of Income

Diversify – never put all your eggs in one basket – it’s common-sense advice from the experts.

The big manufacturers – such as L’Oreal and P&G – make products under myriad different brands. If one product fails, there’s thousands more to fill the gap. You can read more about that here.

What about you as a hair salon owner?

Have you thought about life beyond hairdressing?

Making private label hair care for your own business not only offers an excellent additional income source, it can easily be developed into a business of its own.

With knowledge of the hairdressing industry, you could easily become a full time private label hair care manufacturer. And you can use the same setup to produce an entire range of cosmetics, makeup, cleaning products and detergents.

A personal story … How private label hair care made me rich …

Many years ago, I was approached by a well-known, high-profile celebrity hairdresser. He was fed up with the treatment he received from hair product manufacturers.

For many years he had been a staunch L’Oreal supporter, flying their flag, recommending their products exclusively to his clients. His recommendations sold products by the truckload. He used their products exclusively in his salon – from shampoos, conditioners and treatments to styling gels, sprays and serums. Almost every client took home three of four products.

L’Oreal sales representatives assured him that, although they did sell some products under various brands in supermarkets and pharmacies, they would never sell Elnett hairspray outside of exclusive salons. He sold more Elnet than hundreds of salons combined.

Sure enough, it wasn’t long before that promise was broken. Once Elnet became an established brand (thanks primarily to the efforts of hairdressers), L’Oreal turned the tables and offered it for sale in pharmacies. To add insult to injury, they sold it to pharmacies for much less than they sold it to salons – meaning pharmacies discounted the price and took sales away from salons. Hairdressers had done all the hard work (free of charge) making this particular hairspray a market leader, so that L’Oreal could reap maximum benefit for minimum effort. After another year or two, L’Oreal refused to sell this particular hairspray to salons, making it a pharmacy-exclusive product.

Why? Probably because pharmacy chains are big customers, with much more business muscle than hairdressers – they buy many brands of cosmetics, makeup and hair products (all manufactured by L’Oreal, under a variety of different brand names). Pharmacies don’t like competition from hairdressers and have sufficient strength to pressure manufacturers such as L’Oreal to provide them with exclusive supply agreements.

Fact is, L’Oreal and other conglomerates are concerned about one thing – Profits. They don’t care about the “little guys” – the hair salon owners who promote their products and help give them credibility in the marketplace.

After finally tiring of L’Oreal, this hairdresser then began to stock another brand – Matrix.

Matrix hair care products were introduced to the market as a strictly “salon only” range of products that would “never” be available anywhere but recognized salons, who received professional training in the use of the products. They promised to make a small but effective line of products – no need to stock twelve shampoos, eight rinse-out conditioners, five leave-in conditioners, eleven styling products, four treatments …

Well, a few years later, L’Oreal bought the Matrix brand and … you can probably guess the end of that story.

To cut the story short, L’Oreal’s loss was my gain. I produced a range of private label hair care which saw both this hairdresser and me make a LOT of money.

Ever wanted to start your own cosmetics company?

But you’re not quite convinced you can really make money?

I guess the skepticism is understandable – the cosmetics industry is shrouded in secrecy and previously ridiculously difficult to join.

You can get in now – click here to discover how to start your own cosmetics company.

I am often asked:

Is it really possible to start your own business making cosmetics and detergents?

Without previous experience in the industry?

On a small budget, without investing lots of capital?

Can you really compete with the multinational cosmetic manufacturing giants?

Can you really make it big?

Can you really build a million-dollar business in a very short time?

Well, I hope the following story will inspire you to know that you can start your own high profit cosmetics business – and it may even be worth millions within just a few years.

What if I told you that three young entrepreneurs in Kenya have done exactly that – with no previous experience in the cosmetics industry or in making cosmetics, and limited funds.

As most of us are aware, Kenya is a country facing many social, political and economic challenges.

It’s probably not the easiest place in the world to do business or make a buck.

But in three short years, a team of three aspiring entrepreneurs, determined not to become another jobless statistic, has proven that with determination and innovation, anything is possible.

Their company has been valued at an astounding $830,000 USD (that was in June 2010 – I’m guessing it’s probably worth a whole lot more now).

Before elaborating on their story, I should point out that these young business entrepreneurs are not AustraLab licensees. I’ve deliberately chosen them as an example so there is no bias involved. As you will see from their story, these guys did it the hard way. I’ll allow myself to show some bias here and say that AustraLab licensees have all the information, formulations and manufacturing procedures at their fingertips – it can be a heck of a lot easier to start your own cosmetics business than it was for these guys.

MBB cosmetics company

Back in 2007, three young Kenyan students got together and decided to start their own cosmetics company – Melrose Bounty Bown (MBB). They started with a modest investment of $1900 USD.

MBB looked at various business ideas, and decided that a cosmetics manufacturing company was the way to go.

Then they looked at the market in Kenya. They saw that most women buy two products – a lotion and glycerine – and mix the two together. Innovation came into play, and the trio decided to manufacture a beauty lotion already containing glycerine, with the addition of natural extracts.

They produce about 600 bottles a day with three variations on the formulation – avocado, aloe vera or sunflower oil – in 130 ml and 220 ml bottles.

This burgeoning cosmetics business focusses its sales efforts on small and medium high traffic retail outlets – including cosmetics retailers and distributors, wholesalers, supermarkets, etc.

With production and sales strong, MBB’s competitors offered to buy out this small but highly successful cosmetics company for $384,000 UDS.

In just about any country in the world, that’s a lot of money – and especially so in Kenya.

But MBB was not about to sell – they knew their business was worth much more, with the potential to grow exponentially.

Instead of selling their enterprise, MBB sold a 10% share in their business to Morex Media, a sales and marketing company, for $83,000 USD.

MBB manufactures just one product with three variations – the mind boggles at the potential for expansion. If, at this level, MBB has a million dollar business, what do you suppose would happen if they added a range of ethnic hair care products – shampoos, conditioners, hair treatments, leave-in moisturizers, relaxers, etc. How about specialist skin care products – anti-aging, acne, oil control products, dry skin treatments. What about mineral makeup and color cosmetics especially for ethnic skin tones?

Then there’s cleaning products and detergents … a multi million dollar business in its own right.

You can read more of the MBB story here: http://www.howwemadeitinafrica.com/kenyan-cosmetics-manufacturer-taking-on-large-multinationals/1211/

These three young Kenyans have built a million dollar cosmetics company in just a few years – without any previous experience in the cosmetics industry, without any degree or training in cosmetic chemistry or chemical engineering, without huge capital, and manufacturing only THREE products.

For those of you having doubts – if it can be done in Kenya, it can be done anywhere in the world! What’s stopping you from starting your own cosmetics empire and claiming your share of this massive industry?

Click here to discover the trade secrets of how to make your own cleaning products.

If you have a business which uses cleaning product formulas or detergents on a regular basis, you’re missing out on huge profits if you’re not making your own cleaning products.

How easy is it to make your own cleaning products?

Below is a sample recipe for a popular cleaning product, along with the method of manufacturing. This will give you an idea of how easy it is to manufacture detergents and cleaning products. You can easily make your own laundry detergent, make your own toilet cleaner, make window and glass cleaning spray - make virtually any domestic, commercial or industrial cleaning product.

The actual ingredients have not been listed – this recipe is intended only to give you an overview of the manufacturing process. The AustraLab program provides the exact specifications of ingredients and the accompanying safety procedures for you to make your own professional quality cleaning products.

The AustraLab recipes for cleaning products and detergent formulas are the same as those used by major manufacturing companies. They are intended for those wanting to start a serious, high-profit business – they are not home-crafter “make your own cleaning products recipes”. Home crafter recipes for cleaning products are not suitable for retail sale – click here and here and here to read my posts about the problems with home-made detergent recipes.

Manufacturing procedure – Phase A:

Pour the water into a mixing drum.

Add the chelating agent and mix well.

Add the emulsifier and mix well.

Add the surfactant and mix well.

Add the stabilizer and mix well.

Add the dye and fragrance and mix well.

Phase B:

In a separate container, pour in the water and add the thickening agent.

Slowly add the thickening mixture to the main Phase A mixture until the desired thickness is achieved.

Your product is ready – you just need to test for pH (the procedure for testing and adjusting pH is covered fully in the AustraLab manuals).

This is the basic procedure to make your own cleaning products – from dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent, to window/glass cleaner, disinfectants, degreasers, hand sanitizers, general purpose sprays, etc and even commercial and industrial cleaning products.

You can make your own cleaning products with essential oils and start an aromatherapy designer cleaning products business. Here, the potential for creativity and innovation is unlimited – try eucalyptus oil or tea tree oil for their antiseptic properties, citrus oils for removing odors …

Some cleaning product recipes require only one phase in the mixing process, others require more. But the instructions are easy to follow – you really don’t need any qualifications in science or chemistry to make top quality cleaning products and detergents.

You’ll notice this formula contains over 75% water – hence the huge profit margins to be made when you make your own cleaning products, toiletries and cosmetics.

The most important factors to remember to ensure the success of the products you make:

Always weigh your ingredients carefully and accurately – no guesswork!

Always add ingredients exactly in the order provided in the instructions.

Always take appropriate safety precautions when you make your own cleaning products – wear gloves, protective apron, mask, etc. The AustraLab manuals comprehensively cover all required safety measures for the manufacturing process. Making detergents is quite safe – just follow the common-sense guidelines.

You don’t need complicated mixing machinery – large drums or barrels will do just fine. When you become established, you can always upgrade your equipment. I started out with basic equipment just like this, as have many other big manufacturers. You’ll often find makeshift mixing containers in the back rooms of big companies – they’re still used frequently for experiments and small batches.

If you’re a savvy operator, you can make your own cleaning products for use within your own business, start a wholesale cleaning products business, as well as retailing your products to your existing customer base.

This is an ideal side business for anyone who provides home, office, commercial, industrial or janitorial cleaning services. When you start to make your own cleaning products, you probably won’t believe how much of your profits you have been giving to your cleaning product suppliers. Make a larger batch, label your products and sell them to other cleaning companies, wholesalers, retailers, etc.

There’s virtually no limit to who will buy your detergents and cleaning products. Apart from households, just every business on the planet uses cleaning products – from shops and offices to industry – transport, health, food, manufacturing …

Private label manufacturing is a rapidly growing business sector – making private label cleaning products and detergents (and private label hair care) is still largely untapped, and the potential is enormous.

So, you want to be a cosmetics chemist? You want to join the cosmetic chemistry industry and formulate skincare, makeup, haircare, toiletries and beauty products?

But – you think you need to go to university for four or five years, spend tens of thousands of dollars in tuition fees, and gain qualifications such as a cosmetic chemistry degree or chemical engineering degree – right?

Not so.

Click here to discover the secrets of making cosmetics, makeup, skin care and hair care and join this strictly limited program.

No – you don’t need a university degree of any kind – Not if your main aim in wanting to be a cosmetic chemist is to start your own high profit cosmetics business and join this prestigious multi-billion dollar industry.

The most common myth in the makeup chemistry industry is that you need a university education to start a business in the field of cosmetics manufacturing – or that you need to be lucky in looking for cosmetic chemistry internships.

This is the advice offered on one cosmetic chemistry related website:

“Get a science degree. Unless you have a relative who started the company, you will need a college degree in science since most cosmetic firms require it. Preferred ones include degrees in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. However, plenty of scientists in our industry have Biology, Microbiology, and even Physics degrees.

“Consider getting an advanced degree. True, a 4-year college degree is all you need, but you can improve your chances of breaking into cosmetics by getting an advanced degree.”

It’s true that if you want to make cosmetic formulations from scratch, without any previous experience making cosmetics, and you want to work for a big international manufacturing company, you will need formal qualifications for most cosmetic chemistry jobs.

But if your main aim is to start your own cosmetics business and manufacture your own cosmetics brands (and make much more money than any cosmetics manufacturing company will ever pay you), you don’t need to step foot in any academic establishment, spend a minimum of three or four years studying, or spend tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of dollars in tuition fees. And you don’t need a relative who owns the company – you can own the company.

I’m a cosmetic and chemical engineer with over 30 years experience, so I do know what I’m talking about. And I know that many cosmetic chemistry programs do not equip you with the knowledge and formulations that you need to start your own business.

I developed AustraLab especially for entrepreneurs who want to be able to make makeup, skin, hair and beauty products just like chemists with years of study and experience under their belts. If you just want to get straight into this business and start making money, without the time and expense of a university degree, this program was made for you.

If you can follow a basic cooking recipe, you can easily follow my top quality cosmetic formulas and begin making your own range of makeup, skin care, shampoo, hair care, toiletries and cosmetics. If you then decide you want to become more involved, once you’ve had a little practice and gain confidence, you will easily be able to adapt these formulations to create your own cosmetics formulas - without the need for any chemistry degree – and you’ll be earning much more than the average cosmetic chemistry salary.

My cosmetic chemistry formulations include:

Shampoos and Conditioners

Hairstyling & Finishing Products

Color Cosmetics – foundations, mineral formulas, lip colors, eyeliner, mascara, nail polish

Skincare – cleansers, toners, moisturizers, acne preparations, anti-aging preparations

Suncare – UV protection and self-tanning lotions

Baby care products – shampoo, baby bath and lotion

Men’s – shaving foam, aftershave

Hand Care – hand cleansers, hand scrub, moisturizing creams

Toiletries – handwashes, deodorants

You can easily begin with minimal equipment – you don’t require a fancy laboratory – and just a small supply of raw ingredients. Because most cosmetics and toiletries comprise about 80% water, there’s no need to stock a large inventory of surfactants, emulsifiers, conditioning agents, micas, pigments, fragrances, etc. A small supply will make a large quantity of products.

The beauty about the cosmetics manufacturing industry is that you can make products on order, which will substantially reduce your outlay and minimize losses. As a private label manufacturer – which you can read more about here and here - you can manufacture for hairdressing and beauty salons (and myriad other businesses) under their own label. This is an ever-increasing market, with very little competition. Obviously, the big international companies only manufacture under their own brand names, so this is an open playing field which only a few switched-on entrepreneurs have entered into.

Making cosmetics, makeup, skin care and hair care products is a multi-billion dollar industry – but you don’t need a big budget to start your own cosmetics business.

In fact, you can start a cosmetics business for much less than the cost of many other less profitable ventures.

Click here to discover the secrets and formulations for starting your own cosmetics company.

You’ve probably read success stories of young entrepreneurs who started out as home-based cosmetic makers and went on to become the names behind some of the most popular and successful cosmetic companies in the beauty industry today. The Estee Lauder business empire had humble beginnings, as did so many others.

These are just some of the popular skin, hair care and makeup items you can make and sell in your cosmetics and skin care business:

Face creams and lotions – moisturizers for day and night

Specialised skin treatments – anti-ageing and acne

Body care – body butters, exfoliating scrubs, creams and lotions

Sun creams – UV protection, self-tanning and after-sun moisturizershttp://www.entrepreneur.com/businessideas/865.htmlHair care – shampoos, conditioners and styling products for different hair types

Makeup – including lipstick, lip glosses, mineral formulas, mascara, nail polish

Baby care products and men’s skin care

Hand care – washes, scrubs, moisturizing creams and lotions

If you think cosmetics manufacturing requires a sophisticated and expensive laboratory, think again. This is one of the common myths about starting your own cosmetics line.

You can start a high profit cosmetics manufacturing business with basic equipment for low start-up cost. And you don’t need to be a cosmetics chemist – this is the other common myth. With professional cosmetic formulations and manufacturing instructions, you can easily manufacture cosmetics, skin and hair care products, plus toiletries, using top quality ingredients.

Making cosmetics is one of the most profitable businesses on earth – profit margins easily reach 1000%. Products which retail for $100 usually cost between $1 and $3 to make!

However, in order to make these kinds of profits, you must own your cosmetics formulations, so as to be able to manufacture your range of cosmetics yourself.

If you contract a laboratory to manufacture cosmetics for you, much of the profit will go into the pocket of this cosmetics manufacturing company – not yours.

Check out this story here about a young group of students who started their own skin care business making lotion – in just a few years, it’s now worth a million dollars.

If you own your cosmetic formulations, you will be in control of your business. You will be able to choose your own cosmetic ingredients suppliers, negotiate better deals, formulate your own top quality recipes – comparable with any leading brand, make any size order you require without the restriction of minimum quantities, etc.

I read an article on the entrepreneur magazine website (you can read it here).

To summarize, their advice is:

“The (cosmetics) business can be set in motion for less than a $5,000 initial startup investment. Locate a manufacturer of cosmetic products who doesn’t have representation in your community, state or even country. Negotiate an exclusive contract to represent and distribute their cosmetic products in the desired area. Once the distribution contract has been secured, the cosmetics can be sold to retailers on a wholesale basis. Or you can hire a direct sales team whose main focus is in-home sales of the cosmetics. Both approaches have the potential to generate enormous sales and profits.”

I’ll certainly agree that starting your own cosmetics company has the potential to “generate enormous sales and profits” – but with all respect to entrepreneur magazine, this is not the best way to go about it.

For much less than $5000, you can start your own business as a cosmetics, skin care and makeup manufacturer – not a wholesaler. Manufacturing and wholesaling combined makes good sense – but the wholesale cosmetics business model whereby you act as a “middle man” is seriously flawed for a number of reasons I discuss here.

As a wholesaler, you are at the mercy of a manufacturer who, at any time, could potentially pull the plug on your business. They could stop supply, change ingredients or formulations, delay shipment, etc – if you want to start your own cosmetics business, make sure you’re in control.

Making cosmetics and makeup is a rewarding and creative career – you can mix different micas, pigments and perfumes to create your own unique colors and fragrances.

With a bit of experience under your belt, you’ll also be able to create your own formulations, fill gaps in the market, design unique packaging and labels.

When you own the cosmetics formulas, you can even become a private label cosmetics manufacturer.

What are private label cosmetics?

Many businesses – hair, beauty and spa salons, plus many others – are increasingly becoming aware of the value in selling and promoting their own brand products, carrying their own logo on their own label.

Why? Because, when they promote their own brand, they increase customer loyalty to their own products and their own business – not an international company that sells its skincare, haircare and cosmetics formulations in hundreds, if not thousands, of other salons, pharmacies, department stores, etc.

When you establish your own cosmetics business, you can manufacture cosmetics, skin care, hair care and toiletries for other retailers as a private label manufacturer.

AustraLab provides the cosmetics formulations, along with all the manufacturing instructions, marketing knowledge, labeling etc, to enable you to start a successful cosmetics business. You can benefit from the industry knowledge of a cosmetics chemist with over 25 years experience making cosmetics.

How to make mineral makeup – it’s one of the most popular cosmetic products on the market today – and also one of the most profitable. It is now a multi-million dollar industry in its own right – and its popularity continues to grow.

Click here to discover the secrets and formulations for making cosmetics, makeup, skin care and hair care products.

A mica mineral makeup product which retails for $35 (or more) could cost less than $1 to make – that’s one of the reasons many entrepreneurs wanting to start a cosmetics business often specialize and make mineral makeup.

Many AustraLab licensees have found making mineral formula cosmetics to be an easy and exceptionally high profit way to learn how to make makeup and kick-start their cosmetics business venture.

Another reason is that mineral formula cosmetics are exceptionally quick and easy to make – there are fewer steps involved in the manufacturing process than with traditional liquid foundations. Mica minerals can also be used as pigments in more traditional cosmetics such as lipstick and lip gloss.

Click here to find more information about the use of mica minerals to make eye makeup.

What exactly are Mica Cosmetics and how do you make Mineral Makeup?

Although there is no exact definition, mica mineral makeup is usually in powdered form – though it can also be liquid – and is comprised of micronized color minerals (Iron Oxides and Micas) and sunscreen minerals (Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide).

Of all the cosmetic ingredients found in skincare products (including not only foundations, but also eyeshadow and cheek colors and body lustre powders and lotions), mica minerals are the most “natural”.

Mineral Makeup Ingredients:

Iron Oxides used in mineral formula cosmetics are naturally derived minerals from sources including carbon deposits and china clay.

Micas are naturally derived from the mineral Muscovite Mica. It is primarily used in cosmetics to provide lustre effects and produce a silky feel when applied to the skin.

Titanium Dioxide is obtained from the mineral Ilmenite. Zinc Oxide comes from Zinc Ore.

Some mineral formulas also contain the naturally occurring Bismuth Oxy-chloride, an opalescent pigment obtained from Bismuth. This is added to provide lustre and a smoother texture to the cosmetic.

Mineral makeup benefits – Why are mica cosmetics so popular?

Mineral based cosmetics have many advantages over cream or liquid or traditional powder foundations.

1. The sun protection properties of the minerals can provide anti-aging benefits. Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of the damaging effects of excessive exposure to the sun. And any skin care product which can claim to have anti-aging benefits, already has a great marketing edge before it even hits the shelves.

2. Mineral makeup looks and feels more natural than most other cosmetics. It can be applied in layers to increase coverage where required. This appeals to consumers in most age groups.

3. Mineral makeup adheres exceptionally well to the skin and is highly water resistant. Most consumers want long-lasting makeup.

4. It is quick and easy to apply with a brush. The texture of mineral makeup ingredients provides a soft, silky feel to the skin.

5. Convenient for travelling – no liquids or spillages.

6. Mineral makeup usually require the addition of very little, if any, preservatives when in powder form. Zinc Oxide helps inhibit bacteria. If water is added to the formula to make a liquid, then some preservative may be required. In powdered form, most mica pigments are safe without further preservation.

7. For anyone with problematic skin, allergies, acne, etc, mineral makeup is generally low allergenic.

8. There are a wide range of different color pigments available – depending on the size of the mica particles, you can make mineral makeup with many different effects. Many consumers like the luster that mica pigments impart in makeup.

9. Mineral makeup is usually considered natural and organic – a steadily growing market.

10. From a marketing point of view, consumers are now well educated in mineral makeup benefits – it’s always easier to sell to the converted!

There are many benefits to make mineral makeup – for the consumer as well as the manufacturer.

Ease of manufacturing, low cost of ingredients, high retail prices and the continuing high popularity of mineral formula products makes this an ideal way to start a high profit cosmetics business.

However, if you are considering a business making cosmetics, it is important to use only professional formulations with approved mineral makeup ingredients. Some experience is required in knowing the correct proportions of minerals to use to obtain the required consistency, stability, color and feel to the cosmetic product. The AustraLab formulations of an experienced cosmetics chemist can save you much trial, error and unnecessary expense.

How to make shampoo? It’s actually one of the easiest hair care products to make – very few shampoo ingredients are required and the mixing is usually a single step, rather than multiple phases.

Click here to discover the secrets and formulations for making shampoo, conditioners and hair care products.

And because most shampoo formulas are up to 80% water, the profit margin can easily reach 1000%. You can discover how to make shampoo for countless markets – including salons, as a private label hair care manufacturer.

What shampoo ingredients do you require? To determine this, you will need to decide the purpose for your products – do you want to know how to make shampoo formulas for babies, how to make shampoo for men, how to make shampoo for women, or how to make shampoo for salons? Or even how make shampoo formulas for pets?

Do you want to discover how to make shampoo for a specific hair type – oily hair, dry hair, dandruff, etc.

While the formulation is basically the same, you can add and vary specific ingredients to cater for specific markets. The AustraLab program contains many shampoos, conditioners, styling aids and finishing product formulas, which you can vary to create endless combinations.

You can start your own high profit business as a private label hair care manufacturer or make conditioner and shampoo for your own salon – click here to read more.

Wondering how much money there is to be made in the hair care products market – I think you’ll find this article interesting.

What are the main ingredients in shampoo?

As you will see, learning how to make shampoo and conditioner is partly an art of illusion – many of the ingredients are not essential for the performance of the product, but they add to the users’ experience, creating an illusion of richness and luxury. The shampoo active ingredients comprise only a very small part of the finished product.

1. Water. This is the main ingredient in all shampoo recipes, comprising about 60-80% of the solution. Aside from being inexpensive, it aids in diluting the cleaning agents, thereby reducing irritation, and makes the shampoo formula easier to spread on the hair and scalp.

2. Surfactants (Surface Active Agents – or cleansing agents). These are the primary cleansing shampoo ingredients, comprising about 10-15% of the formula. Similar to emulsifiers, these are able to mix water and oils. There are two types of surfactants – primary and secondary. Primary surfactants include sulfates and sulfonates (for example, alkyl sulfonate, sodium lauryl sulfate). Their primary purpose is to provide cleaning and foaming. Secondary surfactants, as well as adding cleansing and foaming characteristics to the shampoo formula, aid in reducing irritation and drying. These shampoo ingredients include Betaines and Sulfosuccinates (for example, coco betaine, polyglucose). If you want to make shampoo formula for oily, adult hair you would use a higher concentration of the primary surfactant. If you want to make shampoos for babies, you would use only the mild and low-foaming secondary surfactants. Professional quality shampoos do not use ingredients such as castile soap.

3. Thickeners or Viscosity Builders. What this basically means is – how to make shampoo thick and creamy. While thickeners are not actually necessary for a shampoo to be able to cleanse the hair, customers equate thickness with “richness”. Watery shampoos, though they clean the hair just as well, are understandably not popular with consumers. Also known as viscosity builders, these shampoo ingredients include salts and gums (Guar gum, Xanthan Gum, Cellulose). They usually comprise between 2-5% of the formulation. Gums improve viscosity because of their gel-like properties, however they have the added advantage of being able to act as a foam stabilizer and suspending agent to keep insoluble particles in suspension. Examples include zinc pyrithione, which is one of the most widely used anti-dandruff shampoo ingredients.

4. Conditioning agents. To offset the effects of surfactants, most shampoo recipes include conditioners to help smooth, soften and detangle hair. Comprising about 1% of the formulation, conditioning agents include Quaternary compounds (quats) which have a positive charge to neutralize static in the hair caused by negatively charged damaged hair shafts. Quats also possess fatty agents to improve wet combing and provide sheen. Examples of conditioning agents widely used in shampoo ingredients include: Quaternium 80 and 87, plus the polymer guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, and the silicone knows as Dimethicone. Conditioning agents usually comprise no more than 1% of the shampoo formula. You’ll find these components also on the list when you learn how to make conditioner, detangling and smoothing products.

5. Foam Boosters. For most consumers, a shampoo formula that does not foam, does not clean the hair. Technically speaking, this is quite untrue, but this is the perception, which is why you will always find foam boosters on the list of shampoo ingredients. As with viscosity builders, foam boosters give a product the impression of richness and luxury. These are also a form of surfactant, usually containing betaines or alkanolamides, which aid in increasing the volume of foam and size of the bubbles. Foam booster may comprise 1-2% of the formula, and include Sarcosinate, lactylates, Lauramide DEA, Cocomidopropyl Betaine.

6. Opacifiers. Also known as opalescent or pearlescent compounds, these shampoo ingredients add to the customer experience by (again) making the shampoo appear “richer”. Usually comprising 1-2% of the formulation, they include glycol stearate and glycol distearate.

7. Preservatives. Any cosmetic or shampoo formula containing water has the potential to be contaminated by pathogens. For this reason it is essential to include preservatives among shampoo ingredients, to prevent the growth of molds. Common preservatives include methylparaben and DMDM Hydantoin. Preservatives usually comprise only 0.1 – 0.5% of the formulation. To make hair shampoo without some form of preservative would render the product unsuitable for retail sale. Shampoos are usually stored in damp surroundings (such as shower recesses), the lids are often left open, and many consumers add tap water to the bottle – all these factors could easily lead to contamination and the growth of potentially harmful bacteria. The use of a broad spectrum preservative will prevent the growth of pathogens and kill any bacteria that enter the formulation during use. If you are interested to discover how to make natural shampoo or how to make organic shampoo, you will still need to preserve your products adequately to make sure they are safe for consumers.

8. Active Ingredients. These may include vitamins, essential oils, plant extracts, fruit extracts, botanicals etc. Their concentration in the formulation depends on the actual ingredients. These ingredients may not always have beneficial effects, but are used by many major manufacturers as a marketing angle. Natural additives in hair care and skin care products often follow food or health trends – for instance, many hair shampoos and conditioners have recently been formulated with acai berry and goji berry as additives, to name but two such substances.

9. Fragrance and Color. While not necessary for the actual function of the product, shampoos include perfumes and pigments to add to the customer experience. Most are highly concentrated and used sparingly. Again, these ingredients often derive their inspiration from food and fashion trends.

How to start a high profit business? This seems to be the million-dollar question – but is there a million dollar answer?

If you’ve read my main website, (click here to discover the secrets to joining this limited membership program) you might remember I mention the benefits of the AustraLab program as being a high profit business which is difficult for others to copy, where you are in control (at no one’s mercy), and producing everyday necessity consumables.

I couldn’t help but smile when I read a new book, just recently released: The Millionaire Fastlane – Crack The Code To Wealth & Live Rich For A Lifetime, by MJ DeMarco.

Better than Rich Dad Poor Dad, Better Than Think And Grow Rich, better than any book by Donald Trump … this is a great book about how to start a business – not just any business, but a high profit, high success business. It’s a book which I hope you have the chance to read.

In his valuable blog about creating wealth and success, which you can read here, MJ DeMarco talks about ”a simple picture that can make you millions”.

The reason I smiled when I read his advice, is because these are the very reasons that I have been able to enjoy great financial success myself – and the same philosophies I have been passing on to others for many years.

I’ve included three of DeMarco’s top millionaire high profit business strategies below – you can read the remaining concepts on his blog.

If you make makeup, make cosmetics, make shampoo or hair care, toiletries, etc you are indeed creating a business making products which are based on both a “fundamental need” and “pleasure”. As a bonus, many people actually will be able to follow their passion – cosmetics and makeup manufacturing is a “dream” job for many.

If you make detergent, you have a business based on “fundamental need” and “convenience”.

Is there a single person or business on the planet that does not use cosmetics, hair care, toiletries, detergent on an almost daily basis? And, unlike cars, computers and clothing, these items are everyday consumables which must be replaced as used. There will always be a fundamental need – today, tomorrow and in 20 years time.

If you start a successful business, once people see you making money and enjoying success, if they can copy you, they will – it seems an inescapable fact of life. You’ll end up spending a good slice of your time, energy and money continually striving (if not struggling) to stay ahead of your competitors, who will shamelessly copy your every innovation.

How many of your friends, colleagues or neighbors could copy you if you started a business making sandwiches or pizzas, cleaning homes or offices, mowing lawns, detailing cars or retailing clothing or toys? Or writing a blog about training dogs, growing veggies or parenting? These are classic “anyone can enter” businesses. There are few, if any, secrets. The door is open wide.

How many of your friends, colleagues or neighbors could copy you if you started a business making makeup, cosmetics, skin care, hair care, detergent and cleaning formulas?

The barriers to entry in this business are big – the padlock is strong.

Very few people know the trade secret formulations of how to make makeup, making cosmetics, making skin care, hair care and making detergent. Very few people know the manufacturing secrets to make the maximum possible profit from these products. Very few people know the marketing secrets to find the untapped potential markets which could make them millions. Those who know usually keep their secrets for themselves. The door is incredibly difficult for the average person to enter.

You might be interested to read my blog post on how this applies to making money online.

When you own the cosmetics, skin care, hair care, toiletries and detergent formulations - (which is precisely what I offer AustraLab licensees) you own your business. You pull your own strings. You are in control. There are no contracts, no royalties, no leases, no ropes around your neck.

Internet marketers have to exactly do as the Big G tells them – a simple change in algorithms and they could lose their business overnight (it happened to thousands of websites – including some of the biggest players – just a few weeks ago). Would you want your business, your financial lifeline, at the mercy of an internet search engine ??? Franchisees have hundreds of rules and regulations to obey, while continually paying royalties and fees. Retailers need to pray their leases are renewed (at reasonable rent).

As an AustraLab licensee, you can buy your raw ingredients from any number of suppliers. You can choose the packaging. You can choose the colors and fragrances. You can choose to make a few different products or 100. You can choose what hours to work. You can work from home, or any other location you choose. You can cover any geographical area – even operate internationally.

And unlike a popular bath and body products franchise, it won’t cost you a minimum of $120,000 to get started promoting a brand that does not even belong to you, in a shopping centre with crippling rent and overheads.

Not surprisingly, if you make hair shampoo and make conditioner, this is by far the biggest earner in the hair care category. After all, who doesn’t wash their hair – from babies to children, men and women, young and old – on an almost daily basis? Not to mention, the amount of shampoo used in hairdressing salons.

It’s highly profitable to discover the trade secrets of how to make shampoo – most products are between 60-80% water (usually 80%), and the remaining ingredients are amazingly inexpensive. In fact, when you begin to make shampoo for yourself, you will wonder why you were paying $15 for a bottle of shampoo that could cost less than $1 to manufacture.

There are myriad niche markets if you want to start a business and initially create shampoos only, then expand your range of hair care products to include conditioners, styling agents, finishing products, etc.

If you operate your own hairdressing salon or you’re interested in starting a high profit business, read this article about private label hair care.

You can make shampoo for babies – these could be fragrance-free or mildly scented, containing a small quantity of natural oils and gentle surfactants, specially suited for babies’ sensitive scalps. From there, you can branch out to make additional baby care products – baby bath, baby lotion.

You can make shampoo for men – choose masculine aromas and packaging. Then expand your range of male grooming products to include shaving foam, aftershave lotion, deodorant, and men’s skin care such as sunscreens and moisturizers. This is a burgeoning market – especially anti-aging facial products for men. Years ago, you couldn’t find many males willing to take so much as a sniff at eye gel or SPF 15 – today, it’s a very different (and profitable) story.

You can make shampoo for children – fun and colorful packaging and pleasing aromas help kids enjoy washing their hair. Detangling conditioners and leave-in conditioners are always a winner for little girls with long hair.

You can make shampoo, conditioner and styling products for the ethnic hair market – this is a huge growth industry. It is as easy to manufacture shampoo and conditioners for ethnic hair types as it is for any other, and the costs of production are virtually the same, but you can often charge a premium for these in-demand products. In addition, the market is huge and largely untapped – you have only to look at the size of the population with this type of hair to know it’s an incredible number. There’s a big market in most countries – north africa, south africa, the middle east, USA, etc. The other bonus in the ethnic hair care market is that many of these customers will purchase multiple products to help maintain their hair – from gentle cleansing shampoos to intensive daily conditioners, weekly conditioning treatments and masques, leave-in conditioners, smoothing balms, styling products, finishing products such as moisturizing creams and pomades, silicons for the ends of the hair … you name it, there are so many possibilities.

You can even make shampoo for pets! I’ve earned some really big bucks making private label dog shampoos for veterinary clinics.

You can manufacture shampoo and make conditioner as a private label hair care manufacturer. This is where the big bucks really begin.

If you read this article about private label cosmetics and The Great Cosmetics Conspiracy Part 2 you will understand why many retailers – from hair salons, spa and beauty salons, to supermarkets, pharmacies and department stores are growing increasingly wary and weary from selling the brands produced by the major cosmetics manufacturing companies.

Many of my biggest accounts over the years have come from such businesses. Many salon owners have promoted supposedly “salon exclusive” hair care brands, giving years of valuable word of mouth recommendations to thousands of their clients, only to find that once they have done all the hard work and free advertising, these brands then become widely available in discount outlets.

What do they do? They ask me to manufacture shampoo for them under their own label. Or, I approach them with an unbeatable proposition to make shampoo and hair care products with their own name and logo on the bottle. Some salons may continue to sell other brands, but now focus their recommendations on their own private label – and reap the rewards for their own pockets instead of the greedy conglomerates.

The scope to create shampoo and hair care products doesn’t stop just with salons – I find many similar situations across many industries. It’s incredibly easy to convince retailers of the value of selling their own brands – the unethical, underhanded and often illegal tactics of the major cosmetics manufacturing companies make it easy.

Making cosmetics, toiletries and detergent is a multi-billion dollar global industry – full of intrigue and conspiracies. Conspiracies to keep outsiders out!

Because there’s so much everyday profit in cosmetics manufacturing and making detergent (1000%, if not a whole lot more), the multi-national fat-cat conglomerates want to keep it all for themselves – but that’s also why there’s plenty of opportunity for you to enter the market and make a killing.

Apart from trying to keep their formulations away from the eyes of the general public (you) and contributing to many of the myths surrounding this industry, cosmetics manufacturing and detergent manufacturing companies also do their best to conspire to make enemies of the retailers who sell their products.

News out this week announced that the Spanish National Competition Commission has issued fines totaling $70 million USD to eight cosmetic manufacturing companies – for price fixing of hair products.

Nicknamed the G8, a group of eight cosmetics manufacturing companies formed a cartel back in 1989, and were meeting twice a year to discuss market strategies, including pricing.

So, who are these naughty companies? The Commission found the main offenders to be cosmetics manufacturing giants L’Oreal and Procter & Gamble (the subject of my previous blog entries here and here).

L’Oreal was slapped with the fattest fine of all – $31 million USD – just small change for a conglomerate of its size, but nonetheless not good for its image.

Another company, Productos Cosmeticos SLU, which has been owned by L’Oreal since 2004, was ordered to pay $15 million USD.

If that’s not bad enough, the Spanish industry association, The National Association of Perfume and Cosmetics, which presumably exists to protect the interests of all cosmetics manufacturing companies, was also found to have played a key role in the cartel, and received a hefty fine. Conspiracy? What conspiracy???

So, how did the National Competition Commission find out about this?

Seems the whistle blower was one of the cartel members, Henkel Iberica. Under a law passed in 2008, it is free from prosecution in return for supplying details of the cartel’s activities.

I can see a movie script developing here … The Shampoo Mafia …

Still in Spain, last year personal care product giants Sara Lee, Colgate-Palmolive and Puig received fines totaling some $12 million USD (again, just pocket change).

Seems these three had their own little cartel since 2005, whereby they “disguised” a price hike of over 15 % on bath and shower gel products. By reducing the capacity of bottles without altering the price of the products, they were able to cover up an increase in the unit price.

Over to France, and some of the world’s biggest names in cosmetics manufacturing found themselves in hot water – for price fixing of perfumes.

Late last year, the French courts found that luxury brands including L’Oreal (again), Marionnaud, LVMH (which owns Sephora and Nocibe), Chanel, Christian Dior, Guerlain, YSL and ELCO (Estee Lauder and Clinique) were engaged in anti-competitive activity.

The French courts found that all these brands had collectively entered into an agreement with distributors which ensured that all products would be retailed at a single price, thereby eliminating any possibility of competition among retail stores.

The distributing companies were the hardest hits with fines – Marionnaud $18 million USD, Sephora $14 million USD, Nocibe $9 million USD.

Back in mid-2008, the German Federal Cartel Office fined international cosmetics manufacturing companies for exchanging information about sales, advertising costs, price increases and product launches. The companies included many of the usual suspects – L’Oreal (again), Chanel, Clarins, Cosmopolitan Cosmetics (now P&G), Coty, Lancaster, Estee Lauder, LMVH, Sheisedo, YSL.

The companies, which met four times a year since 1995, were fined between $375,000 USD and $3 million USD.

Earlier in the same year in Germany, Sara Lee (again), Unilever and Henkel were collectively fined over $50 million USD for forming a price fixing cartel. Colgate Palmolive was also in on the deal but, like Henkel Iberica, avoided fines by spilling the beans to German authorities.

The group colluded to increase the prices of toothpaste, shower gel and dishwashing liquid by 5%, and prevented retailers from resisting the increase.

So, what does all this mean for you – the aspiring cosmetics manufacturer and/or detergent manufacturer?

The French Commission referred to the price-fixing as a pricing control system that involved “checks on the prices practised, and pressure and threats of commercial retaliation against any distributor who refused to apply the prices imposed by the brand.”

This is the reason that many major retailers – from supermarkets to pharmacies and department stores – don’t like the stand-over bullying tactics of the major cosmetics manufacturing and detergents manufacturing companies. Providing the quality is good, price is comparable and the supply guaranteed, many would much rather deal with smaller manufacturers – like you.

This is also the reason that many major retailers have joined forces with private label cosmetics manufactures and private label detergent manufacturers. They promote their own brand and develop their own customer loyalty, instead of promoting the brands of the multi-nationals who continually conspire against them.

And this is a great opportunity for you to make cosmetics and make detergent under these companies’ own labels – as well as your own.

In addition, the major cosmetics manufacturing and detergent manufacturing companies focus their efforts only on big accounts. They completely overlook hundreds of hungry, untapped markets – this is where you can fill some mega-profitable niches which have virtually zero competition.
